BALTIMORE -
Despite hat tricks by sophomore Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md. / Vermont Academy) and senior Dominique Cook (Morrison, Colo. / Colorado Academy), the University of Denver women's lacrosse team could not fend off a strong attack by Ohio University and lost to the Bobcats, 14-10, Thursday afternoon at Johns Hopkins University.
The Bobcats (5-2) went up 12-6 in the first half on the strength of four goals from Lindsey Hart, who finished the game with five tallies for Ohio.
Denver (2-5) played strong defensively in the second half - with help from players such as first-year Courtnay Gerl (Palm Beach, Fla. / Northfield Mt. Hermon HS), who had seven draws controlled for the game - in outscoring Ohio by a 4-2 margin in the final frame, yet it was not enough as the Pioneers dropped their fourth straight game.
"We had a very slow start and dug ourselves into a hole," said head coach Abby Burbank. "In the second half, we did well to control the ball and implemented our game plan. Ohio is a fast-breaking team that took quick shots."
The Pioneers play their third of four games on their spring break trip tomorrow (Friday) vs. Virginia Tech at Johns Hopkins.
