DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team is headed to Louisiana for their first Sun Belt Conference action of the season this weekend as Denver will take on Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 22, at noon and face Monroe Sunday, Sept. 24, at noon. This is the Pioneers' eighth and ninth consecutive road games.
Led by seniors Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) and Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) the Pioneers are currently 4-2-1 heading into the weekend. Last weekend Denver lost just their second game of the season to then No. 14 Colorado, 1-0, in Boulder, Colo.
Louisiana-Lafayette is coming off a 4-0 road victory over McNeese State. Similar to the Pioneers, Lafayette will have a week of rest after playing just one game last week. This will be just the second home game of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns this season.
Louisiana-Lafayette has a record of 3-3-2 and is unbeaten in its last three games (2-0-1). They are led by freshman Courtney Hofland and sophomore Stephanie Weston. Hofland has six points on the season (2G, 2A). Weston has compiled four shutouts this season, three in a row.
Louisiana-Monroe is coming off a 1-1 weekend in which both games were decided in overtime. On Friday, they lost to Alabama A&M, 2-1, and defeated Central Arkansas at home, 1-0.
Louisiana-Monroe is now 4-4-1 on the season, winning four of its last six games. They are led by Junior Allison Matson and freshman Mallory George who were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association soccer players of the week for the fourth week of the 2006 season. Matson has eight points on the season (3G, 2A) which is second on the team. George has two shutouts on the season, allowing nine goals in nine games.
Denver has never lost to Louisiana Lafayette, going 8-0-1 all time against the Ragin' Cajuns. This weekend will mark the first time that DU has faced Louisiana-Monroe, as they are new to the Sun Belt Conference.
