DENVER - University of Denver men's basketball senior guard Chase Hallam (Mesquite, Texas) was named College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week for Jan. 7-13, the website announced Monday.
Hallam led Denver to a road sweep at Idaho and Seattle last week. DU's lone senior scored eight of his team-high 14 points at Idaho in the final 3:20 on Jan. 10, breaking a tie and sparking a 14-5 run down the stretch. At Seattle on Saturday, Hallam hit a career-high five three-pointers, part of his game-high 17 points.
Overall, Hallam shot 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the field and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from three-point range, while adding a combined eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Hallam continued his suffocating defense, helping Denver limit opponents to just 50.0 points per game last week and 47.6 points per game during the team's current five-game winning streak.
During the weekend, Hallam moved into second on DU's all-time steals list with 168 in his career. He is also third in career three-point percentage (.438) and tied for ninth in three-pointers (141).
Hallam is ranked fourth in the WAC this season in steals (2.1), sixth in three-point percentage (.424), eighth in field goal percentage (.492), ninth in three-pointers made (1.8) and 15th in blocked shots (0.7).
College Sports Madness also named Hallam the Sun Belt Player of the Week on Dec. 27, 2011.
Denver looks for its sixth-straight, when the team hosts San Jose State on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT. The Pioneers will then host WAC-leading Utah State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. MT, in a game that will air live on ROOT Sports.
