DENVER - Head hockey coach George Gwozdecky, head women's basketball coach Kerry Cremeans and head men's basketball coach Joe Scott all addressed the media Tuesday afternoon as the University of Denver held its weekly press conference at the Champions Room at Magness Arena.
Gwozdecky opened the press conference by addressing the tight Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
"The league race is always tight, but I don't remember it being this tight for a long time," Gwozdecky said. "The top three-quarters of the conference all still have a chance to win the league, and there are a lot of teams still fighting for home-ice in the first round of the playoffs. We're in seventh place, and we're five points out of first. We know the challenges that lay ahead and they begin this week at Minnesota Duluth."
Cremeans talked about the improvements she has seen in her team over the last several weeks.
"We have grown and we have gotten better each week," Cremeans said. "Ultimately what you want as a coach is to continue to improve, and I feel like we're doing that. Aside from the first 20 minutes at Utah State, this team has competed in every half of the conference season, and that's exciting as we head into the second half and into the conference tournament."
Scott spoke about beginning the second half of the Western Athletic Conference season.
"There are two sides to the coin as you prepare to face teams for a second time," Scott said. "People like to ask how our opponents are going to adjust to us, but to me, it's more important for us to focus on ourselves. We need to make sure we're doing things the right way to keep getting better. We don't need to get sucked into the cat-and-mouse game of trying to guess what they're going to do, we need to focus on our team and make sure we're getting better collectively."
