Pioneers Sit in 10th Place at Schooner Fall Classic

NORMAN, OKLA. – The University of Denver women’s golf team is currently tied for 10th place with Texas Christian University after two rounds at The Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla., which is being played at the Belmar Golf Club. The Pioneers shot a 26-over par 306 in the second round of play and are 18-strokes back of leader Louisiana State University (+26).

The Pioneers got as close as fourth place after the front nine. “Today was a tough day for us as we really struggled to finish the back nine,” said head coach Lindsay Kuhle, “The conditions were difficult yet again but didn’t affect us on the front-nine, just couldn’t seem to grind it out on the back.”

Senior Tonje Daffinrud (Tonsberg, Norway) leads the Pioneers with a six-over par, two-round performance that has landed her in the top-10 of the overall leaderboard. Sophomore Elyse Smidinger (Crofton, Md.) shot eight-over par today putting her in 27th place at just 10-over par.

Junior Rachel Watton (Edinburgh, Scotland) and freshman Mariell Brunn (Larvik, Norway) both improved on their first round performances. Watton shot a seven-over par on the day as she sits in a tie for 48th, while Bruun was just five-over par on the day. Isabel Southard (Sharon, Mass.) shot an 81, sitting her in 66th place.

“Tomorrow we will come out ready to compete and look to our third, fourth, and fifth players to step up,” said Kuhle.

Louisiana State University leads the tournament heading into the final day. Arizona State University is just two strokes back while Oklahoma State is 3-strokes back of the leader. Tournament host Oklahoma University sits in fourth with a 33-over par combined score.
