Pioneers Edged 1-0 by No. 11 New Mexico

DENVER – Following a delay due to inclement weather, the University of Denver men’s soccer team squared off with No. 11 New Mexico in the final exhibition before the 2013 season, falling 1-0 at CIBER Field on Saturday.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed not to get a win tonight, but ultimately we learned a lot about ourselves both individually and collectively, getting 22 players in against a team that is good as New Mexico,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “In the first half, I think we imposed our game on them but was disappointed that we could not continue it for another 45 minutes. The biggest thing, though, is that this group works extremely hard and gets better every day.”

In the 77th minute of play, New Mexico forward Niko Hansen collected the ball following a tackle inside the DU box and scored just inside the far post to gain a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, sophomore defender Reagan Dunk (Dallas, Texas) gained possession on a rebound inside the box and nearly equalized the game, but his shot was just wide.

For the game, Denver dominated the shots with a 15-4 advantage, including a 10-3 in the second half.

The first 45 minutes proved to be a duel of defenses as both teams went into the half without a goal, and the Pioneers held the Lobos without a shot for the first 44 minutes of the contest.

DU’s best chance to score in the first half occurred in the 32nd minute when the Pioneers attempted a pair of shots within seconds. Freshman forward Kosta Kordistos (Lippstadt, Germany) had a shot that was saved by Lobos goalkeeper Michael Lisch. Senior midfielder Zach Bolden (Denver, Colo.) fired a shot off the rebound, but it was saved by a New Mexico defender on the goal line.

The Pioneers will begin their regular season slate on Friday at 7:30 p.m. MT, when they host UNC-Charlotte.
