DENVER – The University of Denver women’s soccer standout Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) was selected by the Western New York Flash in the National Women’s Soccer League draft earlier today in Philadelphia. Hamilton was the 36th pick in the fourth round of the draft and became the first women’s soccer player from DU to be drafted.
"Having Kristen drafted by the Western New York Flash of the NWSL is a true honor for her and the Denver Women’s Soccer program," Denver women's soccer head coach Jeff Hooker said. "For a player to arrive at Denver as a freshman not knowing if she would be a starter and then become a two time All-American and Denver’s all-time leading scorer depicts the dedication and hard work Kristen has put into her game both on and off the field. We wish Kristen the very best and feel her transition to the next level will be met with a great deal of success.”
Hamilton, the only Pioneer to earn First Team All-American honors, led the Pioneers to two consecutive NCAA appearances, including on trip to the Round of 16 in 2012. The Littleton, Colo., native was named conference player of the year in three different conferences, the only student-athlete in Division I history to do so. With 138 career points, Hamilton holds Denver’s all-time career points record and with 51 goals, she is the all-time leader in goals.
“It's an absolute honor to have been drafted into the NWSL to the New York Flash," Hamilton said. "This is an opportunity that I could have only dreamed of and I'm excited to see how I can impact the team. I wouldn't be in this position if I didn't have the full support of my coaches, teammates, family and friends. Thank you to everyone who helped along the way! Go Flash!"
Soccer America’s College Soccer Reporter has named Hamilton as a Second Team MVP earlier this week. To view Hamilton’s complete profile, click here.
