PIONEERS & MAVERICKS SET TO CLASH AT MAGNESS ARENA THIS WEEKEND

The No. 3 DU Pioneers (16-6-4, 8-3-3-2 NCHC) wrap up their January schedule on home ice this weekend versus the No. 18 UNO Mavericks (14-8-4, 7-6-1-0 NCHC). Friday's game (puck drop - 7:30pm) will be televised by the CBS Sports Network while Saturday's contest (puck drop - 7:00pm) can be seen on Altitude 2 as well as on TSN GO in Canada. Denver is coming off of a weekend split at St. Cloud State while UNO went 1-0-1 on home ice versus Miami last weekend. The Pioneers currently rank second in the NCHC Standings with 29 points while the Mavericks are in fourth place with 22.

On the special teams front, DU currently ranks 25th in the NCAA in PP% (18.7) and 37th in PK% (81.2) while UNO ranks third (25.8) and 51st (78.9). Denver is 21-9-2 all-time versus Nebraska-Omaha, a record which includes an active six-game winning streak.

The Pioneers are led in scoring this season by Florida Panthers prospect Henrik Borgström, who currently ranks T-5th in the nation in scoring by a freshman with 13G-10A-23P (20GP). Between the pipes, junior goalie Tanner Jaillet currently ranks seventh in the NCAA in GAA (1.91), 11th in SV% (.931) and eighth in W% (.727, 14-4-4). His 14 wins tie him for third in the nation.

Sophomore DU winger Jarid Lukosevicius has tallied 3G-5A-8P (6GP) this month, ranking second among all NCHC skaters and T-10th in the NCAA. Lukosevicius scored the game-winner in Denver's 3-1 road win over SCSU last Saturday and is now tied for first place in the nation with five GWG on the season.

Nebraska-Omaha's leading scorer thus far on the 2016-17 campaign is senior forward Austin Ortega, who ranks T-8th in the nation with 34 points (16G-18A). Sophomore netminder Evan Weninger, meanwhile, has started 18 of the Mavericks' 26 games this season, amassing a 9-5-3 record in addition to a 2.77 GAA (T-42nd, NCAA) and .913 SV% (T-30th, NCAA).

DU SLAP SHOTS: Denver won 30 games during the 2016 calendar year which was the highest total in the nation... Will Butcher currently ranks seventh in the nation in scoring by a defenseman with 4G-17A-21P (26GP)... Matt Marcinew currently ranks fifth in the nation with 354 faceoff wins... The Pioneers currently rank sixth in the nation in Team GAA (2.04)... Evan Janssen scored his first career NCAA goal vs. UNO on March 14, 2014... Denver eliminated UNO from postseason contention last season, sweeping the Mavericks 2-0 in a best-of-three opening round tilt; the second and final game of the series was the longest in Magness Arena history at 88:54 (GWG: Colin Staub, 2OT).

MISC. PRE-NCAA CONNECTIONS: Dylan Gambrell (DU) and Fredrik Olofsson (UNO) were teammates on the Colorado Thunderbirds (T1EHL) in 2011-12... Adam Plant (DU) and David Pope (UNO) played together on the West Kelowna Warriors (BCHL) from 2012-14... Sean Mostrom (DU) and Mason Morelli (UNO) were teammates on the Fargo Force (USHL) in 2014-15... Brad Hawkinson (DU) and Austin Ortega (UNO) were teammates on the Colorado Thunderbirds (T1EHL) from 2009-11.
