March 6, 2017 DENVER ââ'¬" University of Denver senior Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas) was named the Big 12 Conference Event Specialist of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Lomonte posted a career-high 9.900 on bars over the weekend on Senior Night in the final home meet of her career.
It was Lomonte's first score of 9.900 or higher since her sophomore season on beam. She finished second in the final bars standings of Saturday's meet against Ohio State. Her score contributed to DU's final event score of 49.325, which ties the sixth-highest bars score in program history and is the team's second-highest score of the season.
After missing the 2016 season with an injury, Lomonte returned to competition in 2017 and has competed as a bars specialist in every meet this season.
In the Big 12 Conference, Lomonte is ranked No. 11 on bars with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.850.
This is the second weekly conference award of Lomonte's career. She was named Specialist of the Week by the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference for the week of February 7, 2015. Denver has now earned four weekly awards from the Big 12 Conference this season: two by freshman Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) and one by freshman Sam Ogden (Allen, Texas).
Denver concludes its regular season with a trip to No. 10 Boise State on Friday, March 10, before competing at its second Big 12 Championship on Saturday, March 18, in Frisco, Texas.
