Pioneers Host Denver Invitational Before Beginning League Play

DENVER— The University of Denver women's volleyball team will welcome Navy, Maryland Eastern Shore and Samford for the Denver Invitational on Sept. 14-15. The Pioneers are 6-0 in Hamilton Gymnasium and look to improve their record in this third-consecutive home tournament.

DU holds an 8-1 mark for the 2018 season, having lost only to No. 19 Utah in five sets on Aug. 25. The Crimson and Gold have tallied 484 kills in 1,122 attempts, and are ranked 16th in the NCAA for hitting percentage (.285%). Senior Becca Latham leads the Pioneers with 111 kills in 36 sets, and sophomore Lydia Bartalo has notched 22 aces this season, which is good for ninth in the NCAA. Head coach Tom Hogan, who is in his third season in charge enters the weekend with a 54-14 record.

Navy comes to Colorado with a 6-4 mark, most recently having lost to Rutgers 1-3 in the Rutgers Invitational. This season, Navy has tallied 452 kills in 36 matches, averaging a .192 hitting percentage, with 422 assists, 49 service aces, and 74.5 blocks. Mids sophomore Maddi Sagattoni was selected as the Patriot League's Player of the Week, and she leads the team in kills (114) and aces (13).

Maryland Eastern Shore holds a 3-7 record for the 2018 season and is fresh off a 1-3 loss against Lehigh on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The Hawks average 10.1 kills per set, 9.5 assists, 11.1 digs, and 1.7 blocks. Lucia Babic leads the team with 120 kills and Ivana Blazevic has a team-high 214 assists. 

Samford enters the Denver Invitational with a 4-7 run in the 2018 campaign. The Bulldogs are spearheaded by Krista Boesing, who leads with 153 kills this season, and Taylor Anderton, who has 465 assists. Boesing has tallied 1,035 career kills, the 11th-highest total in Bulldog history. On Tuesday, Sept. 11 Samford challenged Alabama to five competitive sets, but ultimately fell 2-3.

The Denver and Navy match on Friday, Sept. 14 will be broadcasted live on Altitude TV, and Pioneer fans can enjoy $1 Hot Dog Night in Hamilton Gymnasium.
