Willis Makes Five Saves in US Open Cup Final Victory

Former Pioneer goalkeeper Joe Willis won the MLS Open Cup on Wednesday

HOUSTON –Former University of Denver goalkeeper and current Houston Dynamo keeper Joe Willis made five saves in the US Open Cup Final in a shutout victory of the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night at BBVA Compass Stadium to lift the trophy.

Willis helped the Dynamo to their first major trophy since 2007 with Wednesday night's victory, and the qualified the team for the 2019 Concacaf Champions League.

The former Denver keeper played from 2006 to 2010, redshirting in 2007. Willis earned 51 CAPS for the Crimson and Gold, while keeping eight clean sheets. In his senior campaign, Willis made 64 saves and allowed just nine goals en-route to a 0.72 goals against average.
