BOULDER, Colo. – University of Denver skier
Andreas Kirkeng has been named the Skier of the Meet for the men's Nordic portion of the Alaska Fairbanks Nanook Invitational, the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association announced on Tuesday.
Kirkeng finished on the podium in both races on Feb. 1-2 at Birch Hill Recreation Area in Fairbanks, Alaska, picking up his second and third career top-three placements. The freshman won the 5-kilometer, team start classical event, as he just edged his older brother,
Ole Marius Kirkeng, by two-hundredths of a second for his first career victory.
The Lier, Norway, native followed that performance with a second-place result in the 10K freestyle pursuit race the following day. The Pioneers finished first and second in that race as well, with
Bernhard Flaschberger coming away with the men's victory.
The Skier of the Meet award is given to the top skier in the two combined races, and it can only be won once per season by an athlete. Colorado's Hanna Abrahamsson was named the skier of the UAF meet for the women's Nordic portion.
This is the third such award of the year for the Pioneers, as
Bernhard Flaschberger picked up the men's Nordic honor for the Montana State Invitational and
Katie Hensien earned the women's alpine accolade for the RMISA Invitational.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers wrap up the season at the NCAA National Championships at Park City Resort and Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Utah on March 9-12.
