DENVER (DU/Summit League) – The Summit League and the Big Sky Conference announced the 2023-24 match-ups for the Inaugural Big Sky/Summit Challenge.
Denver will open the two-game challenge slate on Wednesday, January 3, with a double header inside Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneer women will host Idaho and DU's men will host Idaho State. Both Denver programs will then head to Northern Colorado for a double header on Saturday, January 6.
The matchups for the series are determined annually using data from past seasons, including NET rankings and regular-season conference finishes, along with consideration for the prior season matchups.
Due to the short turnaround of scheduling the Challenge games in 2023-34, the leagues also took into account previously scheduled non-conference contests as a factor in determining the matchups, which will be minimized in the future.
"The Summit League is excited to partner with the Big Sky and its member institutions on this innovative concept," Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton said. "This series will help each conference's member schools with guaranteed non-conference games in a challenging scheduling environment. It also gives us an opportunity to creatively engage with fans, while allowing our basketball programs to enhance their resumes. We are appreciative of the Big Sky and Tom Wistrcill for the partnership."
