DENVER – Former University of Denver men's soccer outside back Ian Smith has signed his first professional contact with Portland, the Timbers announced on Friday.
Smith was drafted No. 14 overall by the Timbers in December's MLS Super Draft.
"Ian came to preseason because we knew we wanted to see him with the first team. He has been outstanding and adds great qualities to our roster. We had no hesitation in giving him a first-team deal – it is incredibly deserved," said Portland Head Coach Phil Neville in the Timbers official release.
In 2024, Smith co-captained Denver back to the College Cup for the first time since 2016, playing in 21 of Denver's 23 matches, while tallying 14 points on two goals and 10 assists. Smith's assist total was good enough for the third-most in Denver's Division I history, and ranked seventh in the country in 2024.
The two-time Summit League First Team selection, and three-time selection overall, has played and started in 61 matches across his three years with the Pioneers, scoring six times and adding 21 assists. Smith currently sits third on Denver's career assist list, earning his 21st in the Pios national semifinal game against Vermont last week.
Season tickets for the 2025 Denver men's soccer season are on sale now, and can be purchased here.
