DENVER (Nov. 12) -- The University of Denver broke its first two school records of the 1999-2000 season, yet Wyoming defeated both the Pioneers' men's and women's teams Friday afternoon at El Pomar Natatorium on the Denver campus. Wyoming defeated the Denver men by a 141-98 score, while the Pioneer women lost 154-84.
Sophomore Sarah Corcoran (Denver, Colo. / South HS / Metro State) broke Denver's oldest women's swimming record in the 200-yard freestyle, touching second in the race in 1:58.20. That bettered the previous mark of 1:58.55 set by Lorraine Guibord in 1990.
Sophomore Helen Rychecky (Littleton, Colo. / Heritage HS) won the women's 50 freestyle in 24.63 and just missed breaking teammate Erin McConaughy's school record by .03 seconds. She was the only Pioneer woman to win an individual event, though the Denver women won both relays.
Senior Robert Brooks (Denver, Colo. / Oakland HS / Cumberland College) won the men's 50 freestyle in 21.35, and senior Rikki Rikardson (Rekjavik, Iceland / gir HS / Sund JC) took the 100 free in 47.00. In addition, sophomore Brian Keats (Toronto, Ont. / North Toronto HS / Univ. of New Mexico) claimed the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:53.41, while junior Eric Schneider (Englewood, Colo. / Regis Jesuit HS / Texas A&M) handily won the 200 breaststroke (2:09.97).
"With this being only our second year of Division I, I am extremely pleased with how this team stepped up tonight," said head coach Jim Bain. "We were very competitive tonight - in fact, we were just a few events away from winning this meet. We won three out of the four relays, and I'm impressed that records are already being broken two meets into the season. This pool is very fast - both teams swam great."
Denver next competes in an exhibition meet vs. Colorado next Friday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m.
