LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 1) - A "soft" goal in the 69th minute by Wyoming freshman Sarah Stephens pulled the Cowgirls even with the University of Denver on Wednesday night, and the two teams would leave with a 1-1, double-overtime tie in Laramie in Denver's season opener.
The Pioneers (0-0-1) scored first in the 30th minute off a free kick by senior midfielder Andrea Raleigh (Belvidere, Ill. / Belvidere H.S.) and took a 1-0 halftime lead. After a 15-minute weather delay early in the second half, the Cowgirls (0-1-2) tied the score when Stephens took a pass from Kelly McShane and caught Denver netminder Erica Izard out of position. Izard made 13 saves for Denver, which outshot Wyoming 25-22.
"Andrea made a solid kick on her goal," said Denver head coach Jeff Hooker. "The goal Wyoming scored was kind of a soft shot. Erica was out of position."
The Pioneers are next in action on Friday afternoon as they open play in the Air Force Tournament vs. 23rd-ranked Wake Forest. That game begins at 2 p.m. in Colorado Springs.
