Women's Basketball Falls To Texas, 96-60

AUSTIN, TEXAS (Dec. 2) - Michaela Pavlickova (Prague, Czech Republic) scored her 1,000 point as the University of Denver women's basketball team dropped a road game, 96-60, to Texas on Dec. 2. The Longhorns are ranked 26th in the Associated Press Poll and 28th in the USA Today/ESPN Poll. Denver falls to 2-3 on the season while Texas improves to 7-1.
Texas used a 12-0 run early in the first half to build a 14-4 lead at 15:54 as Denver suffered through a three-minute scoring drought. Texas continued to muscle to a 16-point lead with three minutes remaining in the half (43-27). Pavlickova kept the Pioneers alive, scoring eight of her 13 first-half points in the final nine minutes of the period. She also scored the first four points of the game which brought her career point total to the 1,000 mark and made her just the school's 12th 1,000 point scorer. She finished the game with a team-high 17 points to bring her career total to 1,017. Texas finished the half with a 49-30 lead.
Denver played evenly with the Longhorns for the first five minutes of the second period aided by five points from Nikki Weddle (Denver, Colo.) to open the second stanza. Texas managed another 10-4 run with 11:26 remaining to go ahead 72-46. Denver continued to battle behind seven points a piece from Kellie Carwell (Villa Park, Ill.) and Weddle. Weddle finished the game with 10 points while Carwell and Misty Staton (Duke, Okla.) scored nine points each.
The Pioneers outrebounded the bigger Texas team (37-34), but the Longhorns shot 54 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the free throw line. The Pioneers shot 40 percent from the field and committed 33 turnovers.
"It's good to play this game because I hope we learned something from this contest," head coach Pam Tanner said. "We need to learn how to beat the next level team like Texas. They play at a faster pace and are very aggressive. We need to move on from here and learn something for the rest of the season."
The Pioneers return home to play Baylor on Tuesday, December 5 at 7 p.m., at Magness Arena.
