DENVER (Mar. 4) -- Mike Kenlay and Garth Miles scored two goals each and Brian Berger made five crucial fourth-quarter saves to lead the host University of Denver (3-0) to a 6-4 win over Brown University (0-1) in men's lacrosse action this afternoon. Today's win marks the first time since 1970 that the Pioneers, ranked 27th in this week's Inside Lacrosse Magazine Division I poll, have opened the season with three straight victories. Brown entered the game ranked 24th in the Inside Lacrosse rankings.

Miles' first goal at 3:55 of the first period gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game at 2-1 an advantage they would not relinquish. Chad Wittman and Kenlay pushed the Denver edge to 4-1 but Brown's Dwight Keysor halved the Pioneer lead with a goal at 7:47. Wittman also scored the Pioneers' first goal at 9:05 of the first quarter.

Brown's Chas Gessner, who scored the game's first goal at 10:02 of the opening frame, brought the Bears to within 4-3 with a marker 35 seconds into the second half but Miles and Kenlay once again put the Pioneers up by three with tallies at 12:09 and 9:16 of the third quarter, respectively. Jeremy Metz of Brown scored the only goal in a final period dominated by Berger, who stopped 13 shots on the afternoon and withstood a furious Bear offensive attack over the last few minutes of regulation.

The Pioneers look to extend their winning streak to four games on Wednesday, March 8, when they host Penn State at All-City Stadium. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
