BERKELY, CALIF. (April 5) - Midfielder Sarah Wheatley scored seven goals to lead California to an 18-12 victory over the University of Denver in women's lacrosse action this afternoon, April 5. The Bears improve to 7-5 overall with the win while the Pioneers, losers of six of their last seven, fall to 2-8.
Denver rallied from a 3-1 deficit to pull even with Cal at the 20-minute mark of the first half. The Bears, however, took control of the game by going on an 8-3 run over the final two-thirds of the opening stanza to assume an 11-6 halftime edge.
Kim Bodick paced the Pioneers with four goals and an assist in a losing effort. Dominique Cook and Averill Hovey each scored three times for Denver while Mariana Spry added two goals. Laura Kado added three goals for Cal while Britni Must and Carrie Scribner contributed two goals apiece. The Pioneers' Sarah Hazard had a busy day in goal, stopping 15 shots.
The Pioneers return to action on April 15-16 when they face Davidson and Vanderbilt on consecutive days in Nashville, Tenn.
