Men's Golf Captures First Tournament Title

BRIGHTON, Colo. - The University of Denver men's golf team, leading by 14 strokes entering the final round of play today at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate at Riverdale Dunes Golf Course, was able to hold off Wichita State and Wyoming and captured the school's first tournament championship since becoming a Division I program in 1996. The Pioneers shot their highest team round (294) of the tournament in much more difficult conditions but were able to hold off the Shockers by 16 strokes. The Pioneers shot a 5-under par 859 and were the lone team to break par.

Leading the way for Denver was senior Erik Billinger (Broomfield, Colo.), who fired rounds of 69-69-71-209 (7-under par) and just missed out on his second tournament victory. Billinger was one of just two players to break par for the tournament, the other, Oral Roberts' Miguel Griego, captured medallist honors with a 10-under par 206 that beat Billinger by three.

Denver's John Hulwick (Littleton, Colo.) was Denver's other below par finisher as he shot rounds of 72-67-73-212 to finish 4-under par and alone in fourth place.

"I couldn't be more proud of the way our guys played the last two days," head coach Eric Hoos said. "There was a little bit of pressure out there today playing with the lead and our guys really responded down the stretch. My assistant coach (Brent Franklin) and I tried to keep them calm and playing smart and they did what we told them for the most part. It was a good week for us and the guys really deserve this."

Junior Tommy Hart (Englewood, Colo.) was next for Denver as he finished tied for 17th with a 4-over par 220. Junior Tony Giarratano (Castle Rock, Colo.) and junior Shawn Wills (Broomfield, Colo.) both finished tied for 20th with aggregate totals of 221 (5-over par).

Freshman Barrett Jarosch (Edmonton, Alberta) and junior John Buffalo (Pueblo, Colo.) were next as both finished tied for 33rd at 8-over par 224. Junior Matt Parkin (Denver, Colo.) wrapped up the scoring for Denver with a 16-over par 232 to finish tied for 61st.

Denver is next in action Monday, Oct. 8 when they play in the Wolf Pack Classic at Genoa Lakes Golf Course in Reno, Nev.
