Box Score

DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team, anchored by junior keeper Erica Izard's (Fort Collins, Colo.) three saves, three goals from Denver's forward line and two assists from sophomore defender Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.), earned a convincing 3-0 victory over visiting Arizona in a non-conference match-up on Friday (October 5) afternoon at Pioneer Field. Denver's fourth consecutive shutout improves its overall record to 8-2, the best start since the 1994 squad opened the first half of the season with an 8-1-1 mark. The Wildcats fall to 3-4-1 on the year.

Denver's defensive corps continued its stifling play and successfully shut down Arizona's attack in the first half and despite being out-shot 3-1 in the opening minutes of the contest, the Pioneers maintained their poise and struck first. Junior midfielder Kristin Warren (Littleton, Colo.) scored her fourth goal of the season by heading in a textbook corner kick from sophomore Norwood at 32:42. The ball sailed over the pack in front of the goal and found Warren trailing the play, who blasted the ball into the back of the net to give Denver a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers refused to let their guard down in the second half and continued to pressure the Wildcats. Their efforts were rewarded twice in the half with goals by senior Molly George (Santa Fe, N.M.) and junior Katie Antongiovanni (Bakersfield, Calif.), at 58:02 and 76:09, respectively. George tallied her eighth marker of the season when she tapped in a loose ball when Arizona's keeper Shannon Monti attempted to deflect a cross from Norwood. Antongiovanni also tallied her eighth goal of the year when she fired a bullet into the upper left corner of the net off a free kick from just outside the goal box. The shot slipped by the outstretched arms of Monti to give Denver its final margin of victory 3-0.

The University of Denver women's soccer team has set a new standard this season and has been able to better it each game. With their fourth consecutive victory by way of knockout, the Pioneers extend their shutout streak to 369:17 and have out-scored opponents 32-8 on the season. Seven of Denver's eight wins have come by way of shutout, which marks the best season opening half of soccer in the program's 19-year history.

The Pioneer women will put their four-game winning streak on the line this Sunday (October 7) when they travel north to play Wyoming in a non-conference match-up. Kick is slated for at 4 p.m.
