LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Denver women's soccer team continued its winning ways behind junior midfielder Kristin Warren's (Littleton, Colo.) goal and two saves by junior keeper Erica Izard (Fort Collins, Colo.) to earn a 1-0 win over Wyoming in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Soccer field. Denver's fifth consecutive win improves its overall record to 9-2, the best start since the 1994 squad opened the first half of the season with an 9-1-1 mark. The Cowgirls fall to 2-6-1 on the year. Denver has never lost to Wyoming and holds a 6-0-1 all-time series record.
The Pioneers jumped on the board early and continued to play a strong defensive game as they produced their fifth consecutive shutout victory. Warren's header off sophomore defender Jamie Norwood's (Littleton, Colo.) corner kick gave Denver a 1-0 lead just over one minute into the contest. Denver dominated play on both ends of the field and maintained a persistent attack on the Cowgirls defense by out-shooting Wyoming 20-4 in the game.
The Cowgirls were unable to muster a counter attack against the Pioneers and suffered their third loss in a row and third home loss of the season. Wyoming's defense, despite allowing twelve shots in the second half, stymied the Pioneer offense and became one of only four teams this season to hold Denver to one goal.
The Pioneers have not allowed a goal in 457:17 and have collected their eighth shutout of the season.
The Pioneers will put their five-game winning streak on the line next weekend when they embark on a two-game road trip to face Sun Belt Conference opponents Middle Tennessee State on Friday (October 12) and Western Kentucky on Sunday (October 14). Both games are scheduled for a 1 p.m. MST start.
