GENOA, Nev. - The University of Denver men's golf team is in second place following the first 36 holes of play Monday at the Wolf Pack Classic in Genoa, Nev. The Pioneers as a team shot a 13-under par 563 and trail leader Washington State by three strokes heading to Tuesday's final round.
The Pioneers were once again led by senior Erik Billinger (Westminster, Colo.), who blistered the par-72, 7263 yard Genoa Lakes Golf Club with rounds of 65-69--134 (10-under par) and leads the field by one stroke. His opening round 65 was the best round of the entire field in either round and staked him to a one-shot lead following the opening 18 holes.
Also playing well for Denver was junior Tommy Hart (Englewood, Colo.), who also fired two below-par rounds as he shot 69-71--140 (4-under par) and stands in a tied for fifth. Junior transfer Tony Giarratano (Castle Rock, Colo.) fired his best 36-hole score to date with rounds of 73-70--143 (1-under par) and is tied for 12th.
Senior John Hulwick (Littleton, Colo.) was Denver's next highest finisher as he in in a tie for 25th after shooting 73-73--146 (2-over). Junior Shawn Wills (Broomfield, Colo.) shot 75-74--149 (5-over par) and is in a tie for 45th.
The Pioneers will attempt to win their second consecutive tournament Tuesday as the final round begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
