MONROE, La. - The University of Denver men's golf team finished in sixth place today at the Fred Marx Golf Invitational hosted by the University of Louisiana-Monroe, shooting a 32-over par 896 to finish 47 strokes behind winner Lamar, who closed with a final round 292, the best round of the day, for a 54-hole score of 15-under par 849.

The Pioneers turned in the fourth-best team total of the afternoon with a 12-over 300 during the final round, but was not enough to catch the Cardinals. Denver's Erik Billinger (Westminster, Colo.) paced the field with a three-under par 69 and earned a tie for sixth-place and captures his first top-10 finish of the season. Medalist Mark Cooper of Lamar, who carried a four-stroke lead entering the final round, shot a 2-under 70 for an 11-under 205. Cooper and Billinger were the only two golfers to break par on Tuesday under windier conditions and tougher pin placements.

Senior John Hulwick (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Barrett Jarosch (Edmonton, Alberta) were Denver's next highest finishers as they shot 74, 77, respectively to finish the tournament 11-over par and tied for 25th place.

Other finishers for Denver were Junior Tommy Hart (Englewood, Colo.) who finished one stroke behind Hulwick and Jarosch after shooting a 12-over par 84 in the final round to finish 72-72-84-228 and tied for 31st. Junior Matt Parkin (Denver, Colo.) turned in a 77-78-80-235 and tied for 53rd place.

The Pioneers return to action next week when they host the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate at the Riverdale Dunes course in Brighton, Colo.
