Denver Swimmers Grounded By Air Force

The University of Denver swimming and diving team was swept in a dual meet at Air Force on Friday evening at the Cadet Natatorium in Colorado Springs, Colo. The men suffered just their third defeat of the season, 139-95, while the women, despite winning seven of the 13 events fell 131-108.

The men were led by senior Brian Keats (Toronto, Ontario) who posted two first-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.48) and 100-yard backstroke (53.32). Junior Asaf Schacaf (Tel Aviv, Israel) earned the Pioneers only other victory by winning the 100-yard breaststroke (59.99) and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.95). Other top finishers for Denver were sophomore Nick Boorman (Atascadero, Calif.) and junior Chase Kelly (Littleton, Colo.). Boorman tied Shachaf for second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.95) and finished second in the 100-yard freestlye (49:03). Kelly took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.70) and seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.77).

For the women, senior Kerith Kanaber (Littleton, Colo.) and sophomore Charity Zeigler (River Ridge, La.) paced the way each with two first-place finishes. Kanaber was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.86) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.54), while Zeigler swept the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.56) and 100-yard backstroke (1:00.04). Other first place finishers for Denver were senior Sarah Corcoran (Denver, Colo.) and junior Natalie Sandbothe (Albuquerque, N.M.). Corcoran won the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.38) and finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, Sandbothe finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (54.93) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.98).

The Pioneer women will return to the pool next Friday (Jan. 18) when they host Sun Belt Conference opponent New Mexico State at 4 p.m. in the El Pomar Natatorium.
