Pioneers Fall To New Mexico State

The University of Denver women's swimming and diving team was defeated by Sun Belt Conference opponent New Mexico State, 139-100, in a dual meet on Friday afternoon (Jan. 18) at the El Pomar Natatorium.
The senior trio of Sarah Corcoran (Denver, Colo.), Kerith Kanaber (Littleton, Colo.) and Helen Rychecky (Littleton, Colo.) each posted a first-place finish to lead the Pioneers. Corcoran began the charge by winning the 50-yard freestyle (24.09) and posting a team season-best time in the 100-yard backstroke with her second-place finish (59.09). Kanaber posted a solid first-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:46.57) and a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.92), while Rychecky breezed to an easy victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of (58.44).
Also swimming well for Denver were senior Erin Lundy (St. Charles, Ill.) and junior Katie Holtmeier (Chanhassen, Minn.). Lundy recorded a personal-best time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:46.59) finishing second behind Kanaber and Holtmeier turned in a season-best in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.36) with a second-place finish. In addition, both relay teams recorded season-best times in the 200-yard medley (1:52.82) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.82).
The Pioneer women return to the pool on Saturday morning (Jan. 19) when they host New Mexico State in a Pentathlon at 10 a.m. in the El Pomar Natatorium.
