Pioneers Win Two in Final Day of Big West Invitational

The University of Denver men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the Big West Conference Invitational Saturday, November 02, 2002, by going 2-1 in the dual meet.
The Pioneers lost to host UC Irvine 76-37 in their first match, and then defeated Cal Poly SLO 81-30. The Pioneers other victory was over Cal State Northridge 86-27 in the final meet of the day.
The Pioneers 400-yard medley relay team opened the day with third place finish (3:36.27). Sophomore Caleb Johnson (Denver, Colo.) continued to impress in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.59) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.33), finishing second and fourth in each event respectively.
Senior Asaf Shachaf (Haifa, Israel) took third place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.12. Senior Chase Kelly (Littleton, Colo.) took third in the 100-yard freestyle (1:55.12). Junior John Kolstoe (Fort Collins, Colo.) and freshman Brian Flaherty (Granite Bay, Calif.) finished fourth and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 4:53.64 and 4:55.67, respectively.
Denver wrapped up the meet with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:13.90).
The Pioneers return to action Friday, November 8, 2002 in a home meet against instate rival Colorado School of Mines. The first event is scheduled for 4 p.m.
