ANCHORAGE - -
Senior Kevin Doell (Saskatoon, Sask.), freshman Gabe Gauthier (Buena Park, Calif.) and junior Greg Keith (Delta, B.C.) each scored one goal and junior goaltender Adam Berkhoel (Woodbury, Minn.) made nine saves as the No. 3 Denver Pioneers defeated Alaska Anchorage 3-1 tonight in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action.
The win improves the No. 3 Pioneers record to 10-2-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the WCHA. Alaska Anchorage falls to 1-8-3 overall and 0-6-2 in the conference play.
Berkhoel improved his record to 6-0-1 this season and 4-0-0 after a Denver loss a tie the previous game. The junior played both games this weekend because teammate Wade Dubielewicz (Invermere, B.C.) missed the trip with an injury.
The Pioneers started fast when Gauthier scored just 43 seconds into the game to stake Denver to an early 1-0 lead. Gauthier dug the puck out of the Seawolf zone and beat Anchorage goaltender Kevin Reiter unassisted with a big blast from the left face-off circle for his fourth goal of the season.
Anchorage tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Martin Stuchlik at 12:41 of the second period. Stuchlik re-directed a shot by Seawolf teammate Matt Shasby for the game-tying goal.
Doell's (Saskatoon, Sask.) power-play goal at 16:43 of the second period helped Denver regain the lead at 2-1. Doell received a beautiful pass from Connor James (Calgary, Alberta) and beat Reiter from the low slot for his seventh goal of the season and team-leading 20th point. Senior Aaron MacKenzie (Terrace Bay, Ontario) also assisted on the play extending his assist and point streak to six games.
Keith's empty-net goal at 19:38 sealed the win for Denver.
Denver dominated the game by limiting Alaska Anchorage to just 10 shots and launching 29 of their own. The Pioneers improved their record to 9-1-2 when out-shooting the opposition and 8-0-0 when leading after two periods.
The Pioneers will take a break from WCHA play next weekend when they host Mercyhurst on Nov. 29 and Air Force on Nov. 30 in non-conference action at Magness Arena.
