Denver Men's and Women Swimming and Diving Sweep the

DENVER - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving teams each defeated the Colorado School of Mines in a dual meet on Friday afternoon at the El Pomar Natatorium. The women won with a score of 140-90 (winning 10 of the 13 events), and the men finished ahead of Mines with a final score of 166-68 (winning 11 of the 13 events).

Two freshmen performed particularly well for the women. Michaela Amereller (Munich, Germany) and Lauren Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) each won two events. Amereller won the 200-yard IM and 200-yard backstroke with times of 2:13.57 and 2:10.34, respectfully. Miranda finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.76) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.10). Sophomore Kitt Watkins (Littleton, Colo.) also aided in the cause by winning the one-meter diving event with a school record score of 245.25 and the three-meter event (243.45).

Three Pioneer men led the way, contributing 18 points in the win. Sophomore Caleb Johnson (Denver, Colo.) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.24 and the 100-yard freestyle (47.66). Senior Chase Kelly (Littleton, Colo.) also won two events with wins in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:01.49 and the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.92). Junior John Conyers (Lakewood, Colo.) scored 236.25 to win the one-meter diving and 215.55 to take the three-meter diving event. Junior John Kolstoe (Fort Collins, Colo.) also finished strong by winning the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.76 and taking second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.75).

The Denver women will take the water again when they host instate-rival Colorado State and Northern Arizona tomorrow Saturday, November 9, 2002 at noon at the El Pomar Natatorium. The men will be swimming for success as they take on Wyoming on Friday, November 15, 2002 in Laramie.
