Feb. 21, 2002

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The University of Denver men's golf team remained in 12th place following the second round of play at the John Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament hosted by the University of Hawai'i. The Pioneers as a team have shot a 13-over par 589 through 36 holes and trail leader San Diego State by 20 strokes heading into tomorrow's final round. The Aztecs are the only team in the field to be under par as a team, they lead the tournament with a 7-under par total of 569.

Two Pioneers stand in identical places entering the final round, led by today's charge from freshman Barret Jarosch (Edmonton, Alberta), who shot a 3-under par 69 and vaulted from a tie for 54th to a tie for 17th. Right beside him and the other Denver player to shoot a below-par score is senior Erik Billinger (Broomfield, Colo.), whose 1-under par 71 moved him from a tie for 35th into that 10-way tie at 1-over par for the tournament.

Leading the individuals is John Lieber of San Diego State, who saw his three stroke lead shrink to two over Auburn's Kevin Haefner of Auburn.

Next for Denver is junior Tommy Hart (Englewood, Colo.), who followed his opening-round 73 with a 78 and is tied with teammate John Hulwick (Littleton, Colo.) with a 7-over par 151 and tied for 56th. Junior Shawn Wills (Northglenn, Colo.) wrapped up the scoring for Denver with a 11-over par 155.
