LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Denver women's tennis team fell just short in their Sun Belt Conference season opener today, falling to New Mexico State 4-3. The loss ended a two-match winning streak for Denver, who falls to 3-3 on the season.
Denver began the day with a win on the doubles court, as the duo of Yanick Dullens (Susteren, Netherlands) and Barbara Kourim (Dallas) won the opening match of the afternoon by an 8-3 count. But the Pioneers would falter in the next two matches to lose the doubles point and were trailing 1-0 heading to the singles matches.
Denver grabbed a quick 2-0 lead on singles as both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players for Denver were victorious. No. 1 singles Dullens defeated her opponent Stella Veerman 7-5, 6-4 and No. 2 Kourim beat Lejla Porobic in a three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. But the Pioneers would falter in their next three matches, as freshman Stephanie Ginsburg (Englewood, Colo.) fell to Claire Hamilton in the No. 3 singles match 4-6, 3-6 and freshman Elizabeth Matthews (Jackson, Tenn.) fell in her match to Harriet Piercy 3-6, 0-6. Junior Rossi Thomas (West Vancouver, B.C.) was the next victim for Denver as she fell just short in her match to Carol Blechschmidt, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 as the Aggies clinched the match with that win.
Maru Altamirano (Chula Vista, Calif.) who her match at No. 6 singles over Jenny Pettersson, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to finish for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers earn a quick chance to redeem themselves following today's loss when they take on SBC foe Arkansas State tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and follow that with a Sunday tilt against Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday at 10 a.m.
