Women's Tennis Handles Northern Iowa, 5-1

The University of Denver women's tennis team defeated Northern Iowa Wednesday (Mar. 21), 5-1. The Pioneers, in Florida for the second of three matches during spring break, improve to 6-5 on the season.
Denver swept all three matches on the doubles courts to earn the first point. At No. 1 doubles, freshmen Yanick Dullens and Barbara Kourim topped UNI's Kylene Wong and Jessica Landes, 8-1. On the second court, junior Rossi Thomas and freshman Stephanie Ginsburg defeated Carrie Amsbaugh and Kristina Bothova, 8-6. The Pioneers completed the sweep at No. 3 doubles, as sophomore Beth Messaros and freshman Elizabeth Matthews earned an 8-6 victory over the Panthers' pair of Archana Reddy and Jaime Noyce.
After dropping the first singles match, the Pioneers won at No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 to secure the victory. On the second court, Kourim notched a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Landes, while Ginsburg notched a 7-6, 6-0 win over UNI's Bothova at No. 3 singles. Matthews, at No. 4, defeated Amsbaugh in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-0). On the fifth court, Thomas and Reddy did not finish, while junior Maru Altamirano defeated Panthers' Noyce, 6-1, 6-2 on the final court.
Denver (6-5) will remain in Florida and face Boston College Saturday (Mar. 23).
