Women's Tennis Topples Lumberjacks, 6-1

The University of Denver women's tennis team improved to 7-6 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona, Friday (Mar. 29).
The Pioneers swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point. At No. 1 doubles, Denver's freshmen Yanick Dullens and Barbara Kourim improved to 12-8 overall with their third-straight win, defeating NAU's top tandem of Yvonne de Waal and Kathy Kmiec, 9-7. Junior Rossi Thomas and freshman Stephanie Ginsburg defeated Lumberjacks' second pair of Karen Kmiec and Kristen Balk at No. 2, while sophomore Beth Messaros and freshman Elizabeth Matthews completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory over Ashley Dille and Sylvie Quatremer.
After Kourim lost at No. 1 singles, Denver swept through the final five positions to earn the 6-1 victory. Dullens snapped a four-match losing streak as she defeated Balk, 6-1, 6-4, on the second court. At No. 3 singles, Ginsburg topped Kathy Kmiec, 6-2, 6-2, for her third-consecutive win. Junior Maru Altamirano defeated Karen Kmiec, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, while Thomas beat NAU's Dille, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5. On the sixth court, Messaros won her first singles match of the season, improving to 1-3, with a 6-4, 7-5, victory over Northern Arizona's Michelle Mohr.
Denver (7-6) will return to action Sunday (Mar. 31) with a 9 a.m. match against Montana. The Pioneers and Grizzlies will square off on Easter Sunday at Denver's Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
