LOMPOC, Calif. - The University of Denver men's golf team finished the first day of play in 12th place at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate golf tournament hosted by the University of California-Santa Barbara. Denver shot a 24-over par 600 and trail first round leader San Diego State by 28 strokes heading to the final round.
Denver was led for the first time by junior Tony Giarratano (Castle Rock, Colo.), who opened with a 4-over par 76 in the first round and closed with a 1-under par 71 in the afternoon round to finish 3-over par and tied for 24th. Giarratano is in a group of nine golfers chasing Pacific's Jason Higton, who shot 68-70-138 (6-under par) and is in front by one stroke.
Next for Denver was senior Erik Billinger (Broomfield, Colo.), who shot 75-75-150 (6-over par) and is tied for 44th. After Billinger was junior Tommy Hart (Englewood, Colo.), who shot a 10-over par 154 and stands in 69th place.
Freshman Barrett Jarosch (Edmonton, Alberta) finished tied for 75th and senior John Hulwick (Littleton, Colo.), finished tied for 79th.
The final round of the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate is today, March 8.
