Despite a hat trick by Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.), the University of Denver Pioneers fell to the California Golden Bears 12-9 Saturday at Pioneer Field. The game was rescheduled for today due to the inclement weather conditions Friday.
Baldwin scored all three of her goals in the first half on free position shots, the first two within three minutes of each other. Each time, she was able to beat the goalie with her laser shot.
"Overall, this was a good game of lacrosse," Denver head coach Abby Burbank said. "Give Berkley credit, they pushed the fast break and capitalized. We did well with ball possession, but didn't convert as much as we could have."
Denver trailed by just two goals at the intermission, 7-5, but Cal scored first in the second stanza to take a 8-5 lead. Denver responded to close to within 8-6 when Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored the first of her two goals on the night. Dominique Cook (Morrison, Colo.) tallied her lone goal of the day on a fast break opportunity. Cook took the ball all the way up the right side of the field and made a quick move to beat Cal goalie Eden Coelho with a grounder, making the score 9-7.
Fuchs added seven draw controls to her two-goal day and Mariana Spry (Nashua, N.H.) led the Pioneers with eight ground ball controls. Denver got off 16 shots on goal, but Coelho stopped 11. Cal fired 18 shots on goal and Denver goalie Sarah Hazard (Owings Mills, Md.) made seven saves.
