Women's Tennis Sweeps Metro State, 7-0

The University of Denver women's tennis team won its third-consecutive match with a 7-0 sweep over Metropolitan State College of Denver. The Pioneers improve to 9-6 overall, while the Roadrunners fall to 9-4.
Freshmen Yanick Dullens and Barbara Kourim started things off for the Pioneers at No. 1 singles, earning their fifth-straight win and improved to 14-8 on the year with an 8-3 victory over Metro State's Jasmon Crabb and Hande Gorur. Crabb and Gorur are ranked No. 1 in the North Central Region in Division II tennis. After a Denver loss at No. 2 doubles, the Pioneers earned the first point of the match on the third court as sophomore Beth Messaros and freshman Elizabeth Matthews defeated Lisa Pascual and Natalie Ilott, 8-2.
Denver swept all six singles matches to earn the 7-0 victory. On the first court, Denver's Dullens defeated Crabb in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) to even her record at 12-12. Crabb, currently ranked No. 1 in the North Central Region and No. 18 in the nation in Division II, suffered just her second loss of the year to fall to 11-2. Kourim earned a 6-1, 7-5 win over Metro's Rebecca Meares as she improved to 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Pioneers' freshman Stephanie Ginsburg continued her recent roll and won her fifth-straight match, defeating Gorur, 6-4 and 6-2. It was Gorur's first loss of the season at No. 3, and just her second overall. On the fourth court, junior Maru Altamirano defeated Jessica Meares, 7-5, 6-2, while Matthews improved to 3-0 at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Pascual. Denver?s Messaros earned her second-straight win and completed the sweep on the sixth court, topping Metro State?s Tania Zuvela, 6-0, 6-2.
Denver (9-6) will remain in the Mile High City and close the home slate with a 2 p.m. match against in-state rival Colorado State next Tuesday (Apr. 9). The match between the Pioneers and Rams was originally scheduled to be played last Wednesday (Apr. 3), but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
