WICHITA, Kan. - The University of Denver men's golf team is in sixth place following the first round of play at the Diet Pepsi/Shocker Classic golf tournament hosted by Wichita State University and held at Crestview Country Club. The Pioneers shot a 21-over par 597 and trail first round leader Texas-San Antonio by 27 strokes.

Denver was led by junior Tommy Hart (Englewood, Colo.), who shot an opening round 71 and closed with a second round 74 to finish at 145, 3-over par and 11 strokes behind leader Gibby Martens of UT-San Antonio, who blistered the par 71 course with a two round total of 134, 8-under par. Martens is out in front by five strokes heading to the final round.

Finishing in the second position for Denver was junior Shawn Wills (Northglenn, Colo.), who shot 75-74-149 (7-over par) and is in a two-way tie for 25th. Right behind him and in a tie for 34th were both senior Erik Billinger (Broomfield, Colo.) and freshman Barrett Jarosch (Edmonton, Alberta), who stand at 152, 10-over par.

Wrapping up the scoring for Denver was junior Tony Giarratano (Castle Rock, Colo.), who shot a 15-over par 157 and is tied for 57th.
