LITTLE ROCK, ARK. - The University of Denver women's soccer team, led by senior midfielder Katie Antongiovanni's (Bakersfield, Calif.) two goal performance in the first half, rolled to a convincing, 4-0, victory over Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday afternoon (Sept. 27) at Burns Park. The Pioneers, winners of three straight, won the conference opener in style and improved to 5-1-2 overall on the season, 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play. Arkansas-Little Rock dropped its fifth consecutive game and fell to 4-5-0 overall, 0-1 in the SBC.
The Pioneers tallied all four goals in the first 28 minutes of the game and cruised in the second half to record their fifth shutout of the season. Antongiovanni opened the scoring in the third minute when she chipped in a cross from junior forward Mychael Movius (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). She followed up with her second tally of the afternoon six minutes later when she finished a corner kick from junior Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.) to record her fourth marker of the season and regain a share of team scoring lead with Norwood. Antongiovanni (four goals, one assist) and Norwood (two goals, five assists) have each recorded nine points on the season. Senior forward Kerri Weaver (Littleton, Colo.) and junior line mate Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) each added a goal five minutes apart to increase Denver's lead heading into the intermission, 4-0.
Denver, which has not surrendered a goal to the Trojans in three consecutive meetings, out-shot UALR 8-7 and won the corner kick battle 5-2. Senior keeper Erica Izard (Fort Collins, Colo.) recorded two saves to earn her 34th career shutout, Marsha Stewart made three stops for the Trojans.
"This was a great conference road win for us," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "I thought we played very well in the first half, in fact it was probably one of our best halves of the season. Our efficiency with the ball on offense was great. I thought we did a good job of finding open players on offense which allowed us to finish with some nice goals. We changed our focus in the second half, which allowed some of the younger players a chance to get some quality minutes."
Denver will conclude the weekend road trip against Arkansas State in Jonesboro on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29) at 12 p.m. mountain time.
