Sept. 8, 2002

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - For the second straight match the University of Denver women's soccer team drew a no decision with a 1-1 tie against San Diego on Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon at Torero Stadium. Junior defender Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.) tallied the lone goal for the Pioneers. Denver remains unbeaten this season and improves to 1-0-2 while San Diego improves to 2-1-1 overall.

The Toreros struck first in the 22nd minute with a goal by Freshman Lee Ann Klopschinski, who headed in a corner kick from the far post to give San Diego an early 1-0 lead. San Diego continued to pressure the Pioneer defense, but senior netminder Erica Izard's (Fort Collins, Colo.) unforgiving presence shut down the attack and held the opposition scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Denver took advantage of a break minutes later after a San Diego defender committed a foul in the final third, which resulted in a free kick attempt for the Pioneers. Norwood's initial effort was blocked by the Torero defense, but she gained control of the loose ball after it bounced back to her and fired a rocket from 35 yards out that found the back of the net and evened the game, 1-1.

Torero defender Alexis Obeji was issued a second yellow card in the 71st minute and was ejected from the match, forcing San Diego to play short handed for the final 19 minutes of regulation and both overtime periods. The Pioneers had numerous opportunities in the second half but could not capitalize after a pair of shots hit the cross bar.

Denver returns to action this weekend in the Nike Portland Invitational in Portland, Ore. The Pioneers are slated to take on No. 15 Washington on Friday (Sept. 13) at 4 p.m. and No. 19 Portland on Sunday (Sept. 15) at 3:15 p.m. mountain time.
