DENVER - Senior forward Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) capped her second-career hat trick on Friday to put the University of Denver women's soccer team atop Middle Tennessee 4-2, in its fourth conference match in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Freshman forward Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) also tallied a goal in the win, which boosted Denver's record to 11-2-0 (3-1-0) on the season.
The Pioneers' came out strong and struck the Blue Raider defense just six minutes into the game. Harris broke through defenders for a 1-on-1 and scored her first goal of the day and eighth goal of the season.
Denver was relentless as Grimditch took control of the ball in the 27th minute. Her breakaway resulted in the Pioneers' second goal of the game and her sixth of the season. Although the Pioneers were dominating, MT's Jessica Northcutt scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from Christina Mascaro. The first half finished with Denver leading 2-1.
The Blue Raiders attacked the Pioneer defense in the beginning of the second half as Rebecca Rodriguez scored her ninth goal of the season in the 59th minute to tie the score. The Pioneers were quick to respond as freshman midfielder Laura Mann (Fort Collins, Colo.) launched a pass at midfield to Harris only three minutes later. Harris capitalized on the pass from about 15 yards out to notch her second goal of the game.
Denver finished the game as senior midfielder Melissa Behrent (Westminster, Colo.) beat a MT defender to the corner and drilled a cross to Harris. Harris completed her hat trick with a strong shot from the top of the box to net her third goal of the game and tenth of the season. She now leads the Pioneers in scoring with 21 points.
Goalie freshman Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) made five saves on the day and boosted her record to 7-1 on the season.
Denver returns to action this Sunday, October 19, to face conference foe Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky., at 1 p.m. MT.
