DENVER - Senior defender Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.) scored two goals on Sunday, Oct. 19, to lead the University of Denver women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Western Kentucky in its fifth conference match in Bowling Green, Ky. Senior forward Melissa Behrent (Westminster, Colo.) also tallied a goal in the win, which boosted Denver's record to 12-2-0 (4-1-0) on the season. WKU falls to 8-5-1 (3-1-1) on the year.
The Pioneers' dominated the Lady Toppers from the beginning. Denver struck the WKU defense first from one of senior forward Jenni Harris' (Littleton, Colo.) great flip throw-ins. Behrent positioned herself for Harris' throw-in and headed the ball past goalkeeper Amy Uhlman for her third goal of the season. The Pioneers out shot the Lady Toppers 10-2 in the first half.
Denver entered the second half with the same aggressive behavior. Just 37 seconds into the second half, Behrent sent a pass right to Norwood's foot. Norwood drilled a shot from about 20 feet out to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Norwood sent a free kick past the WKU goalkeeper in the 52nd minute of the game to nail her second goal of the game and third of the season. Norwood currently stands atop Denver's all-time assist record with 35.
The Pioneers out shot the Lady Toppers 20-3 and edged them in corner kicks 6-1. This win marked Denver's seventh shutout victory of the year.
Goalie freshman Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) made two saves on the day and boosted her record to 8-1 on the season. She has recorded five shutouts as a freshman.
Denver returns to home to host conference rivals South Alabama on Friday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m. MT and Louisiana Lafayette on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m.
