Pioneers Show No Mercy in 6-0 win

DENVER - Junior Diana Brunkhardt (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and freshman Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) each tallied two goals in the University of Denver women's soccer team shutout of South Alabama 6-0, on Friday, Oct. 24 at Pioneer Field. Senior Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Danielle Weintraub (St. Louis, Mo.) also added a goal in the Pioneers' win. The victory boosts Denver's record to 13-2-0 (5-1-0) on the season. The Jaguars fall to 6-9-2 (3-2-0).

The Pioneers owned the field the first half, out shooting the Jaguars 19-0. Grimditch recorded her sixth assist of the season off a beautiful cross from the right corner. Brunkhardt captured the pass and took a quick shot past USA's goalkeeper Amber Angermeier. Just four minutes later, the Pioneers struck again. Freshman Laura Mann (Fort Collins, Colo.) broke up a pass between Jaguar defenders. Grimditch stole the ball and sped through USA's defense as she netted her seventh goal of the season.

Denver continued to pressure USA's goalkeeper and successfully broke through in the 42nd minute of the first half. Freshman Elise Mascitelli (Littleton, Colo.) sent a cross from the right side to Harris. Using her size, Harris won the ball in the air and headed it in for her 11th goal of the season. Harris leads the team in scoring with 24 points (11 points, 2 assists). The score remained 3-0 at the end of the half.

The Pioneers were relentless entering the second half as they dominated the field in all aspects of game. Grimditch scored her second goal of the match and eighth of the season off a header from Harris. Continuing on her scoring streak, less than a minute later Grimditch sent a cross from the right side. Weintraub headed the ball in the air and netted her first career goal in the 51st minute.

Denver's last goal of the game came in the 68th minute of play. Mann tallied her fourth assist of the season off her cross to Brunkhardt. Brunkhardt capitalized on the pass and took and incredible shot to score her second goal of the game and sixth goal of the season.

The Pioneer defense was strong, keeping the Jaguars to only three shots on goal the entire game. They held off USA's leading scoring, Tanya Allegretti, who could not manage to get a shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) recorded her seventh shutout of the season and boosts her record 9-1.

Denver returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 26, when they face conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette at 11 a.m. MT.
