DENVER - Five different Pioneers contributed goals in the University of Denver women's soccer team's devastating defeat over Arkansas - Little Rock 5-0 at Pioneer Field on Friday, October 3. Denver tallied 15 points in the game, which marked its first Sun Belt Conference win and boosted its record to 8-1-0 (1-0-0) on the season.
The Pioneers' opening goal in the 15th minute of the game demonstrated Denver's strong teamwork. Junior Maggie Kirchhoff (Redondo Beach, Calif.) tallied her second assist of the season as she passed the ball at midfield to freshman Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.). Grimditch quickly flicked the ball to sophomore Carlynn McCallum (Denver, Colo.) who took a long shot past the UALR keeper for her first career goal.
The Trojans began to fight back but were suddenly stopped as their goalkeeper, Marsha Stewart, was penalized with a red card. Ashley Bocarrossa replaced Stewart as the UALR keeper but the Trojans failed to ever regain momentum. In the 34th minute, junior Diana Brunkhardt (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) took it upon herself to attack UALR's defense and netted her fourth of the season.
The Pioneers entered the second half as determined as the first. They wasted no time as senior Melissa Behrent (Westminster, Colo.) used her incredible speed to dribble up the far side of the field past defenders and beat the goalie in the far post to tally her first goal of the season.
Denver continued to dominate the field as only five minutes later Grimditch received a perfectly controlled pass from McCallum. Grimditch took advantage of the pass and placed the ball just out of the keepers' reach to score her fourth career goal. UALR tried to respond but the Pioneers' goals remained unanswered. Senior Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) scored Denver's fifth goal of the evening after two quick passes from McCallum and senior Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.). The goal marked Harris' sixth of the season.
The Pioneer defense held the Trojans to just 4 shots in the game and shutout UALR's leading scorer, Dee Dee Beyhan. They fall to 4-7-1 (0-1-0) on the season. Goalie freshman Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) recorded her fourth career shutout and boosts her record to 5-1 on the season. Junior Cassandra Kaeding (Saugus, Calif.) played the entire second half and recorded two saves on the day.
"The team played very well and was very efficient," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We were moving the ball quickly and did a good job of sharing the ball and were very unselfish. The starting defenders were extremely solid. Having Mychael Movius back in the game was a real inspiration."
Denver returns to action this Sunday, October 5, to face conference foe Arkansas State at Pioneer Field at noon.
