DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team dominated Arkansas State 2-0 in its second conference game at Pioneer Field on Sunday, October 5. Junior Maggie Kirchhoff (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and freshman Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) scored the Pioneers' two goals. The win marked the fourth consecutive shutout for Denver and boosts its record to 9-1-0 (2-0-0) on the season. Denver has been unbeaten in its last 25 regular season Sun Belt Conference matches. The last loss recorded against a conference team was on September 21, 2001, against North Texas.
The Pioneers controlled the game from the beginning. Although they failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the first half, they out shot the Indians 11-1. Arkansas State goalkeeper Adrienne Mann made four saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
The second half began much like the first as the Pioneers continuously attacked the Indians' defense. In the 62nd minute of the game, the Pioneers drew a foul inside the 18. Kirchhoff took the penalty kick and tallied her first goal of the season as she drilled the ball to the near post past the ASU keeper. The Pioneers out shot the Indians 25-4 on the day.
Denver gained momentum and in the 83rd minute senior Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) created a scoring opportunity with her unique flip throw-in. Her pass was received by Grimditch, who headed the ball in for her fifth goal of the season. She now leads the team in scoring with 15 points (5 goals, 5 assists).
The Pioneer defense held the Indians to just 4 shots in the entire game and shutout ASU's leading scorer, Shawna Sparks. They fall to 4-7-0 (0-2-0) on the season. Goalie freshman Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) recorded her fifth career shutout and boosts her record to 6-1 on the season.
Denver returns to action next Friday, October 10, to face conference foe North Texas in Denton, Texas at 6 p.m. MT. Pioneer action continues in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Sunday, October 12, when Denver takes on Northern Arizona at 2 p.m. MT.
