BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The University of Denver women's soccer team advanced to the final round in the 2003 Hardee's Sun Belt Conference Tournament after a 1-0 win over host Western Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 7. Senior Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) scored the Pioneers' lone goal on the night. The win boosts Denver's record to 17-3 on the season. The Lady Toppers fall to 11-6-2 and end their 2003 year.

Denver and WKU began the game evenly matched but the Pioneers soon picked up the pace. Denver penetrated the Lady Toppers' defense in the 26th minute of the game. Freshman Elise Mascitelli (Littleton, Colo.) sped through defenders up the right side of the field. She sent a blazing cross in front of the net to Harris. Harris took a quick shot past WKU's goalkeeper Amy Uhlman for her 17th goal of the season. She leads the team in scoring with 40 points (17 goals, 6 points).

The Pioneers out shot the Lady Toppers 12-4 and edged them in corner kicks 7-0 in the first half. They ended the half 1-0.

WKU came out more aggressive in the second half and put pressure on Denver's defense. The game went down to the wire but the Pioneers managed to keep the Lady Toppers from scoring and finished the evening, 1-0. With the win, the Pioneers advance to the final round of the tournament.

The Pioneers out shot the Lady Toppers 21-8 and edged them in corner kicks 8-1. Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) recorded her tenth shutout of the year and boosted her record to 13-2 on the season.

"The conditions were not ideal but we did a good job playing with emotion," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "Defensively we did well, it's hard to lose a game without giving up a goal. The crowd gave Western Kentucky a boost at the end but we did a good job holding them off."

With the win over WKU, the Pioneers advance to the finals and will take on the winner of the North Texas/Middle Tennessee game tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 8, at 12 p.m. MT.
