Pioneers Win Easily in Exhibition Season Opener

DENVER - The Denver Pioneers men's basketball team opened their exhibition season with a decisive 92-67 win over the Colorado College Tigers tonight in Hamilton Gymnasium.

The Pioneers began the game scoring 10 unanswered points, led by junior point guard Rodney Billups (Denver, Colo.) with four points. The Tigers responded by going on a 10-8 run, however they were out shot in the first half 46-35, with the Pioneers hitting 18-30 from the floor. Senior Ryan Goral (Westminster, Colo.) led the Pioneers in scoring, with 13 points in the first half, shooting 8-8 from the field, including three 3-pointers.

Denver continued to dominate the Tigers in the second half, leading by as many as 28 points. Senior Carvell McAlister (Fresno, Calif.) scored 10 points in the second half and finished the game with 14 points. Denver's high scorers were Goral and junior Erik Benzel (Spokane, Wash.), who each scored 16 points. Colorado College junior Michael Reich led all scorers with 22 points.

"It was nice to play against someone else and put meaning to our practices," said Pioneers Head Coach Terry Carroll. "We played well tonight but still have a lot to work on before opening the regular season on Monday (Nov. 24) at Gonzaga."

Carroll announced today that freshmen Antonio Porch (Denver, Colo.) and David Kummer (Cedar Rapids, Colo.) will redshirt the 2003-04 season.

The Pioneers will complete the exhibition season with a contest against Southern Colorado Fri., Nov. 14 at 8 p.m., in Hamilton Gymnasium in the second game of a doubleheader with the Pioneer women's basketball team.
