BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the Florida Atlantic Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla., today, Dec. 20. The men's team defeated Florida Atlantic 157-72, before falling to Clemson 158-82, and Utah 128-114. The women lost to Florida Atlantic 138-84, Clemson 191-49, and Utah 140-82.
Freshman Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) had a strong showing, setting a new school record in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:31.75). He also finished in third place in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.26).
Senior John Kolstoe (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished close behind Jollands in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:47.54, for third place. He also shined in the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.30), clinching second place. Freshman James Monaghan (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Brian Flaherty (Granite Bay, Calif.) took fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The men's relay teams fared well, as they took second and third place in the 400-yard freestyle relays with times of 3:13.06 and 3:17.62, respectively. The 400-yard medley relay team notched the fifth-place spot (3:40.75).
For the women, junior Katie Eisenhard (Brownsboro, Ala.) tallied a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.85). Freshman Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) took the fifth-place spot (1:57.11). Zeller also clinched third place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.27).
Freshman Katie Conyers (Lakewood, Colo.) finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.41). The women's 400-yard freestyle relay took fourth place (3:40.69).
Both the men and women return to the pool on Jan. 9, 2004, when they host TCU and Air Force in El Pomar Auditorium. The first event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. MT.
