DENVER- - The University of Denver men's lacrosse team welcomed Manhattan into Colorado by handing them a 14-5 defeat today at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers dominated the stats in front of the 956 fans, out-shooting Manhattan 44-18, collecting 22 more groundballs (39-17) and winning 16 of the 22 face-offs (.727). Duke defeated Air Force in earlier action, winning 13-8.
The Pioneers were led by the Canadian connection in sophomore Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) who had four goals and freshman Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta) who added three. Also playing well were sophomores Erik Swanson (Glenview, Ill.), Darren Sasaki-Scanlon (Norwalk, Conn.) and freshman Adam Miller (Columbus, Ohio) who each added a goal and an assist. On the draws sophomore Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) won eight of 11, Snider took five of seven and junior Mike Hadden (Columbus, Ohio) won three of his four contests.
Denver opened up the shootout at the 13:02 mark of the first quarter with Brown scoring off a pass from Sasaki-Scanlon who was perched behind the net. Swanson and Snider both found net and the Pioneers looked to shut out Manhattan in the quarter but the Jaspers scored with seven seconds left to end the first stanza 3-1.
Manhattan picked up the pace in the second and scored just over a minute in the quarter (13:51) but Denver answered with Davidson, Miller and Brown returning the favor within a six-minute span. The Jaspers again closed out the scoring by picking up their third tally with 1:25 left in the first half to pull within three (6-3).
Pioneer head coach Jamie Munro gave the word to seal the home team's victory in the second half and his squad obliged by scoring the next seven goals. Davidson recorded his second (7:01) and Brown (4:38) clinched the hat trick in the third quarter to put Denver up 8-3 and the onslaught continued in the fourth with Snider adding two goals and Sasaki-Scanlon, Brown, Snider and Biggs each contributing another. The Jaspers finished on a high-note scoring two more goals in the final five minutes before senior Glenn Berglund (Norwalk, Conn.) iced the win with his first goal of the season at the 1:16 mark.
Denver will take the field again tomorrow (2/23) against No. 7 Duke in the final game of the Pioneer Face-Off Classic at 12:30 p.m. Air Force and Manhattan will battle in Sunday's first game with game-time coming at 10:00 a.m.
