Women's Tennis Battles Past Furman

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Senior Maru Altamirano (Chula Vista, Calif.) led the University of Denver women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over the Furman Paladins Friday night. The Pioneers improved their season record to 5-4.
Altamirano won the deciding match for the Pioneers by defeating Furman's Lauren Welch in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in No. 6 singles.
"Two weeks in a row, Maru has come up big for us," said head coach Dana Young.
The Pioneer women swept all three rounds of doubles. Contributing to the effort, freshmen Suzana Maksovic (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Jenny Trettin (Berlin, Germany) teamed up to beat Caroline Bentley and Lauren Welch of Furman, 8-2, in No. 2 doubles and then continued their strong play with wins in their respective singles matches.
"We beat another tough team, so it was a good one for us today" said Young. "We are going to be ready for another tough match coming up on Sunday too."
The Pioneer women's tennis team continues action March 2 starting at 11 a.m. at DU's Stapleton Tennis Pavillion. They take on Boise State.
