DENVER - Junior Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) had three goals and an assist and sophomore Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added two goals and assist to lead the Denver Pioneers to an 11-9 win over the Wagner Seahawks this evening at Pioneer Field. Denver has now won three consecutive games for the first time since 1998.
The Pioneers improve to 5-3, while Wagner drops to 0-4.
Senior Mari Spry (Nashua, N.H.) (2g) and first year Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.) (2g) also worked over the Seahawk defense to contribute two points each. Denver had an edge in shots (33-23), holding Wagner to only eight second-half opportunities. The Pioneers also had 18 groundballs to the Seahawks 14. Sophomores Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas) and Steph Schneider (Leesburgh, Va.) excelled in this area, each picking up four.
Senior Sarah Medwell (Seattle, Wash.) came around the right side of the crease to score her sixth goal of the season, giving Denver an early advantage. The Seahawks responded putting home four goals during the next seven minutes. Heather George scored two of her three goals 22 seconds apart during the run. Greenlees and Spry put an end to the run and pulled the Pioneers to within one half way into the first half.
A Pan Sobieski goal at the 13:11 mark put Wagner up 5-3. Baldwin, the nations leading scorer (4.14 points per game) scored two straight goals, tying the game at 5-5. The Seahawks responded again with two goals of their own, including the third by George. Spry contributed her second goal on a free position shot, making the score 7-6 Wagner at the break.
The win seemed in question as Wagner increased the margin to two on Sobieski's second score just one minute into the second half. Fuchs scored the game-winning goal, capping a four-goal Denver run, giving the Pioneers a 10-8 lead with 14:22 remaining in the contest. The Pioneers defense allowed only goal over the final 28 minutes of the second frame, as Kelly McVeigh got free from the Denver defense. First year Jovan Drotar (Herdon, Va.) added a late goal for the Pioneers to seal the victory.
After a short layoff for Spring break Denver will return to the field on Saturday, April 4, when the team battles Delaware within the comfy confines of Pioneer Field at 1 p.m. MT
